Oil, balm, gel or milk: which cleanser is actually yours

If your cleanser leaves your face tight, or your make-up still comes off on the towel afterwards, the problem is almost never the brand. It is the texture. Most people are using one that was designed for a different kind of skin, on a different kind of day.

There are four textures worth knowing about, and they are not interchangeable. Three questions will tell you which one is yours - and this is the step we spend most of our time correcting across the counter, because getting it right makes everything you put on afterwards work better.

Answer three questions

  1. Do you wear sunscreen or make-up most days? If yes, you need something oil-based in the evening. Water and foam do not dissolve either of them, whatever the bottle says.
  2. How does your face feel two minutes after you wash it? Tight, squeaky or in need of cream means your current cleanser is too strong. Comfortable and slightly dewy is right.
  3. Oily by midday, or dry by midday? This decides the second cleanse, not the first.

The four textures

Cleansing oil

Yours if you wear sunscreen or make-up daily and want it gone in one pass. You massage it on dry skin, add water, and it turns milky and rinses away. It is the most thorough of the four and the fastest. Not yours if you dislike the slip, or you have very reactive skin that objects to the emulsifiers.

The cult one: ma:nyo Pure Cleansing Oil. Lighter and cheaper: Purito From Green Cleansing Oil. For oilier skin that fears oils, SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil is the lightest of the three.

Cleansing balm

Yours if you want the thoroughness of an oil but prefer something solid in a jar - no spills, no pump, easier to travel with. It melts on contact and behaves exactly like an oil from there. It also feels more comforting on dry skin in winter. Not yours if you share it and would rather not everyone dip their fingers in the same jar.

Ours: Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm - the one people in store pick up, try on the back of a hand, and buy.

Cleansing gel or foam

Yours if you want a second cleanse after an oil or balm, or a quick morning wash. This is the texture that should feel like nothing - a low pH, gently foaming gel that rinses clean without stripping. Not yours if you are using it alone to remove sunscreen, which is the most common mistake we see. A foam on its own will not get SPF off, and that is where congestion comes from.

For oily and combination skin: TOCOBO Coconut Clay Cleansing Foam at EUR 12.95, or ma:nyo Deep Pore Cleansing Soda Foam. If you break out, Heimish Matcha Biome Amino Acne Cleansing Foam. For a gentler, enzyme-based wash, By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Milky Foaming Wash.

Cleansing milk

Yours if your skin is dry, sensitive, or currently unhappy, and anything foaming feels like too much. It cleanses by dissolving rather than lathering, so nothing gets stripped. It is also the right answer during a barrier repair, when you want to take as little as possible out of the skin. Not yours if you wear heavy make-up - it will not shift a full face on its own.

The one we reach for: SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Gentle Cleansing Milk. If your skin is tight and stinging rather than just dry, start with the barrier routine first.

Double cleansing: when it is actually necessary

Not twice a day, and not every day. The rule is simpler than the internet makes it:

  • Wore sunscreen or make-up? Oil or balm first, then a gentle gel. Both steps.
  • Bare skin all day? One gentle cleanse in the evening is enough.
  • Morning? Lukewarm water, or a gel if you are oily. Never an oil cleanse in the morning - there is nothing there to dissolve.

Twice a day with a strong foaming cleanser is how most people end up with a damaged barrier in the first place. Double cleansing means two different textures in one evening, not washing your face twice as hard.

The mistakes that make a good cleanser feel bad

  1. Hot water. It strips lipids no matter how gentle the product is. Lukewarm, always.
  2. Rushing the oil. An oil cleanse needs sixty seconds of massaging on dry skin before water goes near it. Thirty seconds and a rinse will leave half the sunscreen behind.
  3. Going straight for the towel. Pat, do not rub, and put the next step on while the skin is still damp.
  4. Judging a cleanser by how clean it feels. Squeaky is not clean, it is stripped. The right cleanser feels like almost nothing happened.
  5. Changing it every month. A cleanser is on your face for sixty seconds. It is the step where consistency matters more than novelty.

If you are between two of the four, take our skin quiz - two minutes, the same questions we would ask across the counter, and it builds the whole routine rather than just the cleanser. Or browse all cleansers and double-cleanse pairs.

    Frequently asked questions

Is cleansing oil bad for oily skin?

No - this is the most persistent myth in the category. Oil dissolves oil, and a light cleansing oil removes the sebum and sunscreen that a foam leaves behind. Oily skin that congests is very often skin that is not getting its sunscreen off properly.

Do I need to double cleanse if I only wear sunscreen?

Yes. Sunscreen is designed to stay on through sweat and water, which means a water-based cleanser will not shift it. Sunscreen alone is reason enough for the oil or balm step.

What does low pH actually mean?

Your skin sits at around pH 5. Traditional soap is around 9, which is why it leaves that squeaky feeling - it has shifted your skin far out of its range and it takes hours to recover. A low pH cleanser cleans without that shift. If your cleanser leaves you squeaky, its pH is too high for your face.

Micellar water - where does that fit?

As a convenience, not as a cleanser. It is fine for a quick removal before the gym or on a travel day, but it leaves residue and needs rinsing off afterwards. It is not a replacement for either step.
