What to do about a spot in 24 hours

It was not there last night, you have something on Friday, and you are standing in front of the mirror deciding whether to squeeze it. Do not squeeze it. What you can realistically do in 24 hours depends entirely on which kind of spot it is - and most people treat all of them the same way.

A hydrocolloid patch is close to magic on one kind and completely useless on another. Thirty seconds of looking at it properly will tell you which plan you are on.

First, which kind is it

A whitehead with a visible head

Raised, pale or yellowish at the tip, sore only if you press it. This is the one patches were invented for. The hydrocolloid draws the fluid out overnight, and you will see it in the middle of the patch in the morning. Flatter by breakfast, mostly gone in a day.

The one we sell most of, by a wide margin: SOME BY MI 30 Days Miracle Clear Spot Patches - two sizes in the box, EUR 4.95. COSRX Master Patch Basic is the other one people come back for.

A red bump with nothing on the surface

Deep, firm, tender before you can even see it. A patch will do almost nothing here - there is nothing for it to draw out yet. The honest goal for tonight is not removal, it is bringing the redness and swelling down so it is less obvious tomorrow and comes to a head faster. Something calming beats something drying.

Use a centella patch to take the heat out rather than a plain one: Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Spot Patch or VT Cosmetics Cica Spot Patch. A targeted treatment under it helps: AXIS-Y Spot the Difference Blemish Treatment.

Several at once, along the jaw or chin

If they arrive together, in the same place, around the same time each month, this is a pattern, not an incident. Treating them one by one with patches works for tonight and changes nothing about next month. Skip to the last section.

The 24-hour plan

For a whitehead. Start it the evening before you need to look your best, not the morning of.

  1. Evening, after cleansing. Dry the area properly - a patch will not stick to damp skin or over a serum. Nothing else on that spot: no acid, no treatment, no moisturiser underneath.
  2. Patch on, and leave it. Pick a patch slightly larger than the spot. Press the edges down for a few seconds so it seals.
  3. Overnight, six to eight hours. This is the whole mechanism and it needs the time. Taking it off at 2am to look at it restarts the clock.
  4. Morning. Peel it off slowly. If there is a white circle in the middle, it worked. Rinse, moisturise, and if the spot is still slightly raised put a fresh patch on for the day.
  5. Before you go out. A thin patch can go under make-up. Do not try to cover a fresh spot with layers of concealer instead - it cakes around the edge and draws more attention than the spot did.

What makes it worse

  1. Squeezing. It pushes the contents sideways and down. One squeezed spot becomes three, and the mark lasts months instead of days.
  2. Toothpaste. It burns the skin around the spot. You trade a spot for a patch of irritation that takes longer to go.
  3. Stacking acids on top. A spot treatment plus an exfoliating toner plus a patch is not three times the effect. It is a chemical burn in one small circle.
  4. Taking the patch off early to check. Every time you lift it you break the seal and it stops working.
  5. Treating a deep bump like a whitehead. Drying products on something that has not surfaced make it angrier and slower.

If you get them in the same place every month

Then patches are a plaster, and useful as one - but the work is in prevention. Two things change this more than anything else:

  • A BHA two or three nights a week. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it gets inside the pore rather than working on the surface. This is the single most effective preventative for the jaw-and-chin pattern.
  • Stop changing products. Give anything six weeks before you judge it. Most people switch at week three, right before it would have started working.

The standard: COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. Start twice a week, at night, and never on the same night as a retinoid. Or see the whole acne and blemish range.

And if it is cystic - deep, painful, leaving marks - skincare is not the answer and no patch will be. See a dermatologist. We would rather tell you that than sell you something that will not work.

Want a routine built for your skin?

Spot patches handle the emergency. If the spots keep coming back, the routine is the thing to fix - take our skin quiz and it will build one around your skin type and the pattern you are describing. Two minutes, and it only uses what is in stock.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do you leave a spot patch on?

Six to eight hours, which is why overnight is the right slot. Less than four and you will not get the benefit. There is no harm in leaving one on for twelve.

Do spot patches work on blackheads?

No. A blackhead is an open, oxidised plug, not fluid, so there is nothing for the hydrocolloid to pull out. Blackheads are a BHA job, and a slow one.

Can I put a patch over a spot treatment?

Not a plain hydrocolloid one - the product stops it sticking and the patch stops the product breathing. Either one or the other. The exception is the centella patches, which are designed to sit over a calming treatment.

Why does a spot leave a dark mark for months?

That is post-inflammatory pigmentation, and it is mostly decided by how much you interfered with the spot. Leave it alone and the mark is lighter and shorter. Niacinamide and consistent sunscreen fade what is left - sun exposure on a fresh mark is what makes it stay.
