If your skin feels tight straight after cleansing, stings when you apply products that used to be fine, and flakes no matter how much moisturiser you use, you are probably not dealing with dry skin. You are dealing with a damaged skin barrier - and it needs a different fix.
Dry skin is a skin type. A damaged skin barrier is a condition, it can happen to any skin type including oily skin, and unlike a skin type it can be repaired. Most people repair theirs in about four weeks, with three products and a short list of things to stop doing.
This guide covers the five signs to look for, how to tell a damaged barrier apart from ordinary dryness, why it gets so much worse between October and March, and the exact routine we recommend across the counter in our Vienna and Graz stores.

5 signs your skin barrier is damaged
Tick off how many of these sound like your skin right now.
- Your skin feels tight straight after cleansing. Not an hour later - immediately, before you have applied anything. That tight, squeaky feeling is lipid loss.
- Products that used to be fine now sting. A serum you have used for months suddenly tingles or burns. Nothing changed in the bottle; your barrier changed.
- You have flaking that make-up sits on top of. Usually around the nose, the cheeks or the chin. Moisturiser disappears into it within an hour.
- Your skin goes red for no clear reason. It flushes, then calms down, then flushes again - triggered by temperature, wind, or nothing obvious at all.
- Your skin looks dull however much you moisturise. A healthy barrier reflects light evenly. A damaged one scatters it, and the result reads as grey and tired.
Two or three of these means early damage, and acting now will turn it around in a week or two. Four or five means your barrier is genuinely compromised, and the four-week routine further down this page is what we would put you on in store.
What the skin barrier actually is
Think of the outermost layer of your skin as a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks. Holding them together is a mortar made of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. That mortar is your skin barrier, and it does two jobs at the same time: it keeps water inside your skin, and it keeps irritants, pollution and bacteria out.
IMAGE 2 - DIAGRAM. Brick wall, two states side by side: intact (mortar full, water held in) and damaged (gaps, water escaping). Brand light green line art. Reusable on Instagram and in future posts. [ file: img-02-skin-barrier-diagram.webp ]
When the mortar washes out, the wall develops gaps. Water escapes faster than your skin can replace it. Irritants get in where they normally could not. Your skin responds the only way it can - tightness, redness, stinging and flaking.
What damages the skin barrier
- Cleansers that are too strong, especially high pH foaming washes used twice a day
- Over-exfoliating - acids, scrubs and peeling pads used more than two or three times a week
- Retinol introduced too fast, or used alongside acids
- Hot water, in the shower and on the face
- Cold, dry air and indoor heating, which is why this is a seasonal problem
- Switching products constantly, so your skin never settles on anything
Dry skin or damaged barrier? How to tell the difference
This is the distinction that decides whether your routine works, and it is the one most people get wrong. Reaching for a richer moisturiser treats the symptom. Rebuilding the mortar fixes the cause.

Why skin barriers break down in autumn and winter
Barrier damage is seasonal, and the trigger is not the cold itself - it is the contrast.
IMAGE 3 - Our own Vienna autumn or winter photo. A street, a window, breath in cold air. No stock photography. [ file: img-03-vienna-autumn.webp ]
From October, heating dries indoor air to a fraction of its summer humidity. You step from a 22 C flat into 3 C wind several times a day, and your skin has to cope with both. Hot showers feel wonderful and strip lipids faster than any cleanser. Add the wind coming down the Ring and skin that was perfectly happy in August starts to crack within about three weeks.
If your skin changes every autumn and settles again in spring, that is not your imagination and it is not your products. It is the season - which also means it is predictable, and you can get ahead of it.
How to repair a damaged skin barrier in 4 weeks
Repairing a barrier is not about adding more. It is about removing what is damaging it, then giving your skin the three things it needs to rebuild itself. Three products, four weeks.
Step 1 - Strip less: change your cleanser
The fastest way to damage a barrier is a cleanser that is slightly too strong, used twice a day for months. If your face feels squeaky after washing, that feeling is the mortar going down the drain.
Swap to a low pH, gently foaming cleanser and use lukewarm water, never hot. This single change does more in the first week than any cream will.

Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser - EUR 17.95. Low pH, gently foaming, deep-sea mineral water base. Cleans properly without the squeaky feeling. See all gentle cleansers
Step 2 - Refill: a calming repair serum
Next, give your skin its repair materials. Centella asiatica - cica - brings down the inflammation that comes with barrier damage, and panthenol, provitamin B5, speeds up recovery and holds water in the skin while the barrier rebuilds.
Apply to slightly damp skin, morning and night. This is the step that stops the stinging, usually within a few days.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule - EUR 12.95. 100% centella asiatica extract. Calms the redness and the stinging while the barrier rebuilds. See all repair serums
If your skin is also marked from past breakouts, SOME BY MI Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Serum is a good alternative at this step - same calming effect, with added snail mucin for repair.
Step 3 - Seal: a real barrier cream
The last step locks everything in. A barrier cream built around ceramides and fatty acids does not simply sit on top of your skin - it replaces the mortar that is missing, so your skin can hold its own water again.
Use more than you think you need, every night, over the serum. Do not skip it in the morning either.

Dr.Althea 345 Relief Cream - EUR 25.95. Ceramides, panthenol and fatty acids. Our most recommended barrier cream, and the one we sell most of every winter. See all barrier creams
Oily or combination skin with a damaged barrier should use Dr.Althea 147 Barrier Cream instead - the same ceramide repair in a lighter texture that will not feel heavy through the T-zone.
What to avoid while your barrier heals
This part matters as much as the products. A barrier rebuilds in roughly four weeks, but only if you stop interrupting it.
- No acids or peels. AHA, BHA and PHA all come out of the routine. They remove the layer you are trying to rebuild.
- No retinol. Powerful and worth coming back to, but not now. Reintroduce it in week five, twice a week, over your barrier cream.
- No hot water. Lukewarm only, on your face and in the shower.
- No more than one active at a time. Your skin cannot repair itself and process three actives at once.
- Stop switching products. Four weeks on the same three products beats four weeks of experimenting. Very often the switching is what caused the damage in the first place.

What to expect, week by week

- Week 1 - the stinging stops. Products stop reacting. Your skin still feels fragile.
- Week 2 - flaking clears. Your skin starts holding moisturiser instead of drinking it within the hour.
- Week 3 - redness settles and your tone starts to even out.
- Week 4 - make-up sits properly again, and your skin looks lit from within rather than shiny.
If you reach week four with no change at all, the cause is probably not your routine. Come and talk to us in store, or see a dermatologist.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a damaged skin barrier take to heal?
Most people see the stinging stop within a week and the flaking clear by week two. A full repair takes about four weeks. If the damage came from months of over-exfoliating, give it six.
Can I use retinol while repairing my skin barrier?
No. Pause it completely for four weeks, then reintroduce it twice a week, applied over your barrier cream rather than under it. Retinol on an already damaged barrier is what caused the problem for a lot of people in the first place.
Is a barrier cream enough on its own?
It is the most important of the three steps, so if you only change one thing, change this. But a cream cannot do its job if you are still stripping your skin twice a day with the wrong cleanser.
Can oily skin have a damaged barrier?
Yes, and it is common. Oil production and barrier function are two different things. The signs are the same - stinging, redness, tightness - and the fix is the same three steps in lighter textures. Use Dr.Althea 147 Barrier Cream rather than a rich cream.
Do I still need sunscreen in winter?
Yes. UVA comes through cloud and window glass all year, and it breaks down the same lipids you are trying to rebuild. A lightweight SPF every morning is part of the repair, not an extra. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-fresh: Rice + B5 is the one we recommend most often for this.
What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin lacks oil and is a skin type. Dehydrated skin lacks water, is temporary, and is usually a sign that the barrier is not holding moisture in - in other words, dehydration is often the first symptom of barrier damage.
